These guys are testament to the insulating properties of sheep’s wool They’re tough, coping admirably in the recent freezing temperatures and snow. Perhaps we could make use of their fleeces when the weather warms up, to insulate our chilly attic….

I think it’s safe to say winter has arrived at La Jonchère. The temperature has dropped and is forecast to keep diving, the gite is closed until next spring, the veg patch is under a duvet of mulch (along with an optimistic sowing of broad beans and peas for next year…) and the woodpile is high.

The webcam at Sancy is showing a promising start to the ski season with a sprinkling of snow and more on the way.

Time to get the thermals out and dust down the skis….

“Then summer fades and passes and October comes. We’ll smell smoke then,
and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness, swift elation, a
sense of sadness and departure.”

- Thomas Wolfe

Ok, I know it’s already November, but thanks to big list of jobs to do in the house and garden I’m a bit behind in the blog department…

We had a tip-off on the whereabouts of some chanterelles, so we headed there today only to find someone had beaten us to it!

Better luck next time.

Not to worry, we continued down the road to the lovely waterfall which made up for it.

There are some things that I miss from living in the UK – friends and family of course, fish and chips, gigs, PG Tips….
There are also things I don’t miss – constant traffic noise and pollution, the stuffy office, the gym….

It would be easy to get complacent about exercise though – digging the garden alone is not enough to burn off the croissants and vin – so I’ve decided to make more use of my mountain bike. It’s very hilly round here so an hour on the bike is as good as any spinning class.
I can go an hour without seeing a car (a few tractors maybe..) the hedges are fragrant with wild honeysuckle and at the top of each hill is a lovely view.

This is my new gym.
