trous·seau, n. [French, from Old French, diminutive of trousse, bundle. See truss.] The possessions, such as clothing and linens, that a bride assembles for her marriage.

Also seen as a kind of dowry, a traditional french trousseau would have probably contained among other things, hand embroidered monogrammed bedlinens for her new marital home.

Times  have changed, and as a consequence bundles of exquisite embroidered linens occasionally turn up at brocantes and vide-greniers.

I have a selection for sale in our online shop, along with other treasures from french attics…

 Cartes Postales

This old postcard is a collectable from this website.

It’s the Castel Hotel, still operating today in our local town  St Gervais d’Auvergne.

It doesn’t have a date on it but it could have been last year….it hasn’t changed much…!

20100808 brocante Vide Grenier
It’s the time of year when the French ‘empty their attics’ and put their unwanted treasures up for sale at the local Vide-Grenier (car boot sale to us).
This weekend was the turn of St Gervais d’Auvergne and it was quite a turn-out. The whole town centre was packed with stalls full of interesting stuff.

There are some new additions to the online shop – bistro aprons and lavender hearts, all handmade from remnants and vintage fabric.
Coming soon shopping bags and more vintage finds from the local brocante.

20100716 tresor Le Trésor
I’ve been treasure hunting at the local Brocante (St Eloy les Mines). They have lots of vintage enamelware, crockery and glasses – I was in heaven!
Some of these items will be going in our shop.

20100614 fraise 1 Les Fraises

The strawberries are tantatlizingly close to ripeness, we’ve had a couple each straight from the plants, but not enough for a dessert yet.
In the meantime I raided the store cupboard for something sweet and made this flapjack from a vintage Cranks recipe book. It’s made with treacle rather than syrup, it is super quick to make and absolutely delicious!

Cranks Flapjack

Butter 150g

Raw brown sugar 75g

Black treacle 75g

Porridge oats 225g

Pinch of salt

Melt the butter, sugar and treacle in a pan – do not let it boil. Mix in the oats and salt and stir thoroughly. Press into a 20cm square tin and smooth over the surface with a palette knife, . Bake in the oven at 190ºC for 25-30 minutes, until set and golden brown. Mark into portions while still warm, then leave to cool on a wire tray. Store in an airtight tin.

The design brief for the 2CV

“….was for a low-priced, rugged ‘umbrella on four wheels’ that would enable two peasants to drive 100 kg of farm goods to market at 60 km/h, in clogs and across muddy unpaved roads if necessary. France at that time had a very large rural population, who had not yet adopted the automobile, due to its cost. The car would use no more than 3 litres of gasoline to travel 100 km. Most famously, it would be able to drive across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs it was carrying. {The designer} later also had the roof raised to allow him to drive while wearing a hat.”

About as french as you can get.

humber Humber Hawk

http://www.humber.org.uk/
The Humber rides again….
The Humber rides again! With the help of a kind friend with a tractor we managed to extricate the poor old Humber from the hedge, before it disappeared forever in the brambles.Ok it wouldn’t pass an MOT, even here, but it’s still quite intact (the engine is in a box in our cellar…) We think it’s a Mark V, but would be grateful for an expert opinion. It’s going up for sale soon so if you’re a game vintage car restorer watch this space.
