There are some things that I miss from living in the UK – friends and family of course, fish and chips, gigs, PG Tips….
There are also things I don’t miss – constant traffic noise and pollution, the stuffy office, the gym….

It would be easy to get complacent about exercise though – digging the garden alone is not enough to burn off the croissants and vin – so I’ve decided to make more use of my mountain bike. It’s very hilly round here so an hour on the bike is as good as any spinning class.
I can go an hour without seeing a car (a few tractors maybe..) the hedges are fragrant with wild honeysuckle and at the top of each hill is a lovely view.

This is my new gym.

20100708 queuille Méandre de QueuilleThe  pretty little village of Queuille is quite unsassuming at first glance.  A grand looking Mairie, a little café, copious flowers in window boxes, the usual.

It does have a Musée du Jambon which sounds intriguing, but of course I was there at lunch time and it was closed (when will I learn?)

Anyway, head through the village, past the the immaculate church at the far end and down a little path through the woods, and this is what you’ll find…

After a day of blistering summer sunshine nothing beats lying in the hammock in the dappled shade of the trees, gently swaying in the cooling breeze, listening to the chirupping cicada and watching the sun setting over the meadow.

Now what could be nicer than that.

“Weather means more when you have a garden. There’s nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans”

The secret is out…

“The amazing landscape of the Auvergne region of France can take your breath away, as can the architecture and the charm of the chateaux and villages” – The Telegraph

“With its volcanic mountains, pristine rivers and superlative spas, the Auvergne region is the ideal location for activity holidays of all kinds” – The Telegraph

“This is my sort of country — of soft-sided, sleeping volcanoes and cows, of lakes, forests and village cafes where madame wears slippers and mojitos are things you spray against.” – The Times

Better get here quick before more people find out….
